Three '18: The SPC Presidential Scholars for 2018

THREE ’18: ST. PHILIP’S COLLEGE’S THREE 2018 SPC PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD RECIPIENTS NEVER STOP ENGAGING, NEVER STOP ACHIEVING

Three 2018 St. Philip’s College Dr. Adena Williams Loston Presidential Scholarship Award recipients were introduced during a recipient reception and banquet in the college’s student-run Artemisia's restaurant at 1801 Martin Luther King Drive. The 2018 cohort includes recipients Nicholas Lokey (automotive technology and 2017 alumni scholar), and new scholars Dorathy Tarpeh (licensed vocational nurse) and Virginia Tovar (physical therapy assistant).

• Lokey gives back though service with the organization Pedal Against PTSD, assisting with bike repairs and bike reconditioning as needed for veterans who cycle to heal.

• Tarpeh personally serves meals at San Antonio Food Bank, and in addition to assisting in sorting and packaging food items for distribution, she assists by maintaining the garden area where fresh vegetables are grown for clients in need.

• From the Food Bank with colleague scholar Tarpeh to the Special Olympics through her physical therapy assistant student association membership, Tovar gives back to her community year round.

While Tarpeh, Tovar and Lokey are each members of the college's honor society, Lokey is both a ranch hand and an automotive technician at Chaparral Ford. Tarpeh is a patient care aide at Northeast Baptist. And Tovar interns as a physical therapy assistant in the city. Through giving back and achieving academically, each has contributed to helping St. Philip’s College achieve record enrollment numbers and outstanding community engagement while bringing a Governor’s Award for Performance Excellence to San Antonio in 2018.

Each recipient was awarded a scholarship based on a high GPA and an eight-month commitment to participate in a community service project. Recipients and guests were invited to the program that was hosted by St. Philip’s College President Dr. Adena Williams Loston and her leadership team.

Each 2018 St. Philip’s College Presidential Scholarship recipient also receives $1,500 in the fall semester and $1,500 in the spring semester for a total of $3,000.
