Student Selected for the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities

August 4, 2021

The White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) announced the selection of Darius Martin as the St. Philip’s College 2021 HBCU Competitiveness Scholar. The initiative recognizes outstanding student leaders and empowers them with tools for excellence and competitiveness. Students are nominated and endorsed by their institution’s administrators.

During the course of his one-year term, Martin will engage in local and national opportunities that ignite new passions and explore ideas critical to lifelong growth and development. In addition, he will participate in monthly web chats that support a wide range of topics, including the spirit of engagement and entrepreneurship, broad-based innovation, and career development.

“Being an HBCU Competitiveness Scholar means a lot to me, I have the opportunity to be part of the rich history of St. Philip’s as well as represent our students on a national level,” he said. Martin hopes to use his platform to connect students with HBCU alumni associations to help them transition into an HBCU at a university level.

Martin is currently pursuing an Associate of Arts in Business Administration. He recently completed a one-year term as the Alamo Colleges District Student Trustee where he represented over 65,000 students. The Alamo Colleges District is one of the few community college systems in the state with a student trustee.

Martin is currently the President of Collegiate 100, a chartered support organization to the 100 Black Men of San Antonio that supports the growth and development of young men and women of color. In his free time, Martin mentors high school students on professional development skills and college readiness through My Brother's Keeper of San Antonio. In addition to mentoring, he participates in various community service activities and volunteers with Wealth Between Us, a non-profit organization.
