The Alamo Colleges District Family Stands With Our Community

The Alamo Colleges District family stands with our community in this time of pain, anger and injustice. The killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, as well as the tragic deaths of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, have left us all in a state of grief and heartache. The lives of these men and women of color, like so many before them, were cut short inhumanely simply because of their race.

Our thoughts are with the families of the victims, the communities who are facing head-on the systemic racism and unjust racial disparities that have plagued America for hundreds of years, and with our own community, in San Antonio and at the Alamo Colleges District, as we confront the injustice and seek ways to fight ignorance and intolerance.

For more than 75 years, the Alamo Colleges District has made it our mission to empower our diverse communities for success. As a district of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) and the nation’s only HSI and Historically Black College, we are renewing our commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The events of the last few days have recommitted us to continue in our dedication to bolster our communities, to provide more opportunities for social and economic mobility, and to educate the next generation of leaders to be bold in taking a stand against hate and bias.

Education is our core service, and, as George Washington Carver said, “Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom.” We will never stop educating, but we will also never stop listening and learning and supporting our communities of color.
