SAC Hosts Girls STEM Summit

San Antonio College was the site of the free one-day conference for some 100 young girls ranging from grades six through 12. Named the Girls STEM Summit, the event is now in its fourth year and is held annually during the summer. 

Sponsored by SAC’s Scobee Education Center, this year’s Summit featured various workshops and guest speakers, including keynote speaker, District 7 City Councilwoman Ana Sandoval. 

Sandoval holds Bachelor’s of Science in Chemical Engineering from M.I.T., a Master’s of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Stanford University, and a Master’s in Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health and spoke to the crowd of young girls providing wisdom and advice about her personal journey. 

According to Scobee Education Center Director Rick Varner, the attendees followed a conference style format and participated in group activities and workshops ranging from robotics to engineering, and cyber security to water purification. “This is the largest Girls STEM Summit we have hosted,” claimed Varner. 

As well, attendees got to hear from a distinguished panel featuring 10 women professionals in STEM fields. Following the panel discussion, United States Congressman Will Hurd (District 23) addressed the group of young ladies and toured the center. 

Each attendee was provided a conference bag, a Scobee T-Shirt, and additional resources to learn more about STEM opportunities.
