Meet Richard, he is a first-generation college student. Richard will be receiving an Associate of Arts in Psychology.

At the time Richard started the program, he was experiencing homelessness. The situation, however, did not deter him from making an impact on campus. Richard became a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success, president of Future United Latinos for Change, vice president of Active Minds, and member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. He was also selected as the 2021 Presidential Scholar and recipient of the Whataburger Feeding Student Success Scholarship (2022).

His ability to grow his network on campus led to learning about resources available to better his living situation. “I was blessed with the staff and advocates at St. Philip’s College who pointed me in the right direction,” said Richard.

Richard has continued to make an impact, most recently nationally in being selected as a NASA Community College Aerospace Scholar (NCAS). Scholars get a closer look at NASA’s unique missions and research to learn how to develop their talents, interests, and passions. They also participate in one of three missions.

This Fall, Richard will transfer to either the University of the Incarnate Word or Texas Lutheran University to pursue a career in pharmacy. This summer he will be attending the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy Project Engage Pharmacy Program (PEPP) camp.
