St. Philip’s College hosted A Taste of the Garden to celebrate the restoration of the MLK Campus Community Garden. The garden project was funded by the $20,000 award from the Home Depot® Retool Your School competition in April. St. Philip’s College was one of 30 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to win this year’s competition.

The event debuted the new gazebo and garden bed which displayed a bountiful harvest of beets, lettuce, carrots, cabbage, and other vegetables. The event also featured door prizes, a scavenger hunt, and light refreshments picked, prepared, and served by Culinary Arts students.

The SPC Community Garden is a civic engagement project that started in Fall 2015. The project was temporarily stalled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now restored, the garden will continue to be a space where people can gather in community to learn more about planting, gardening, herbs, and agriculture.
