SAC and KLRN-TV Establish Rosenda Rios Memorial Endowed Scholarship

January 7, 2022

San Antonio College and KLRN-TV, the local PBS affiliate, are pleased to announce a partnership that will offer a paid six-week internship to recipients of the Rosenda Rios Memorial Endowed Scholarship.

Rios was a San Antonio anchor and reporter who worked at KLRN-TV in the mid-1980s and later worked as an anchor and investigative/consumer reporter for KSAT-TV, the local ABC station. The scholarship was created for Radio-Television-Broadcast program students at SAC after her passing in July 2020.

KLRN Intern Gabriel Gonzalez.jpegThe inaugural recipient of the Rosenda Rios Memorial Endowed Scholarship - Gabriel Rene Gonzalez - will start his internship in February and will receive a paid internship for the semester to include training in camera work, video editing, news writing, producing and interviewing for news stories.

Gonzalez, a SAC Radio-Television-Broadcast student, says his dream is to sit behind the KSAT anchor desk, just like Rios.

“The internship means opportunity and, in my opinion, it says something about this community by picking a local student,” Gonzalez said. “I know this opportunity doesn’t come around every day. I’m looking forward to soaking it all in.”

One of Rios’ former colleagues at KSAT, Shari St. Clair, now director of news and production at KLRN, wanted to honor Rios’ memory by offering SAC students this opportunity.

SAC President Dr. Robert Vela said the paid internship will expand the college’s experiential learning opportunities for students.

“We are thankful to KLRN for enhancing the Rosenda Rios scholarship with this internship,” Vela said. “We always seek new ways to offer our students career-relevant opportunities to engage, develop new skills and establish employer connections for their future careers. This internship will provide SAC students with real world skills.”

The Rosenda Rios Memorial Endowed Scholarship is currently offered to San Antonio College Radio-Television-Broadcast program students for both spring and fall semesters.
