St. Philip’s College President Dr. Adena Williams Loston recently named three recipients of the Presidential Scholarship Award for 2022-2023 – Marcus D. Clark, Darshana S. Maharaj and Helen G. Trota.

The Presidential Scholarship is intended to help students actualize their potential in addressing societal issues and challenges by providing funds to support their education. The scholarship is valued at $3,000 and is awarded in $1,500 increments per semester. Terms of the scholarship require substantive community service activities related to healthcare, social services, child advocacy, the environment, sustainability, or economic development. Each scholar was selected based on academic progress, cumulative GPA and commitment to scholarship requirements.

Upon graduation, Presidential Scholars receive an additional $900 per year to serve as a transfer scholarship to a 4-year college or university.

Marcus D. Clark, a Culinary Arts student, is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. He is recipient of the DLynn Proctor and Fantesca Estate scholarship, Tres Grace Family Scholarship and San Antonio Ivy Educational Scholarship. Clark serves the SPC community in the Student Advocacy Center.

Darshana S. Maharaj, an Invasic Cardiovascular student, volunteers to serve food with the needy and helps Texas Diaper Bank with distribution of diaper packages to address the diaper gap for families in crisis. Maharaj is on the President’s Honor roll.

Helen G. Trota, a Culinary Arts student, is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the National Society of Leadership and Success. She serves youth in the community by mentoring, tutoring, providing activities and meals at Young Life Ministries.

Throughout the year, the students will meet regularly with Dr. Loston for group and individual mentoring sessions.
