Respiratory Student Awarded Scholarship by Prestigious Honor Society

Lambda Beta, a prestigious national honor society sponsored and maintained by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC), presented St. Philip’s College Respiratory Care Technology student, Melissa Drake, the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC), Stephen P. Mikles, EdD, RRT, FAARC Media Award.

The $2,000 scholarship is presented in honor of CoARC’s Past-President, Stephen P. Mikles, who served as a member of the Joint Review Committee for Respiratory Therapy Education (JRCRTE) from 1994‐1998 and subsequently on the first Board of the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care. The award honors scholastic achievement and character of students, graduates and faculty members of the respiratory care profession. 

“I am very grateful for their financial support. I am passionate about respiratory care and hope to become a critical care respiratory therapist specialized in asthma education,” said Melissa.

Melissa began the program in the fall of 2019. She is one of over 50 students currently pursuing a future in respiratory care through the St. Philip’s College Respiratory Care Technology Program. In the program, students learn content and clinical practice experiences that are designed to sequentially develop, apply, critically analyze, integrate, synthesize and evaluate concepts and theories in the performance of respiratory care procedures. Upon program completion, graduates receive an Associate of Applied Science degree and are prepared for the Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential.

Melissa will graduate in July 2021 and currently serves as a respiratory therapy aide and stress test tech at North Central Baptist Hospital.
