Transportation & Manufacturing Technologies Department Chair Speaks During TWC Forum

August 25, 2020

St. Philip’s College (SPC) Associate Professor and Transportation & Manufacturing Technologies Department Chair, John Haral, joined the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) as a panelist during their virtual Office of Employer Initiatives (OEI) Business & Industry Upskill Aerospace Forum. In his presentation, Haral discussed the role of SPC’s Aircraft Technology program in meeting the growing demand for aviation professionals. He also spoke on how through program collaborations with the local aerospace industry the program is able to align its training with the latest technologies and concepts.

The SPC Aircraft Technician program continues to be the only provider of customized instruction for the aerospace industry in San Antonio. The program offers traditional college courses for students seeking the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe and a Powerplant license. Students gain a comprehensive understanding of the operation, maintenance and repair of turbine aircraft engines and their associated systems. Upon completion of the program, students can pursue various positions within the aircraft industry including, Airframe and Powerplant technician, aircraft electrician, aircraft avionics technician and aircraft fuel systems technician.

"The program has been a key player in aviation workforce development and continues to produce a pipeline of skilled technicians. Having SPC represented in the TWC forum was important because the aerospace industry relies on community colleges to provide trained technicians to meet their needs and SPC does this well,” said Haral.

The TWC OEI Business & Industry Upskill Forum is part of the Skills Development Fund COVID-19 Special Training Initiative. The sessions play a vital role in providing statewide training to meet the growing demand for a skilled and trained workforce during the coronavirus pandemic. Each forum is focused on a specific industry, serving as an opportunity to hear from various business and industry partners on new trending business operations and training.
