Inspirational SPC Student Leader Earns Inspirational Scholarship

AN INSPIRATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR AN INSPIRATIONAL STUDENT: ST. PHILIP’S COLLEGE'S STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION COMMISSIONER IS A LA PRENSA FOUNDATION INSPIRATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

A corporate student government leader at St. Philip’s College is the recipient of a scholarship for giving back while inspiring and leading.

The student is Keiko Stanberry, pursuing an associate of science degree with a course of study in science---and a career goal of practicing as a dental hygienist.

The scholarship and $500 award Stanberry ceremonially received during an Alamo Colleges District Board of Trustees meeting is the La Prensa Foundation Inspirational Scholarship August 2018.

“This school is outstanding for the students and the community. Thank you so much for investing in my future,” Stanberry said from the podium in remarks during the ceremony Aug. 21 in Room 101 of the George E. Killen Community Education and Service Center at 201 W. Sheridan St.

The foundation invests in San Antonio through scholarships for youth and adults who desire postsecondary education and are confronted with financial hardships. Through donations from sponsors, the foundation has awarded in excess of $2.7 million to students at such institutions as St. Philip's College. 

In addition to earning a 3.77 grade point average, Stanberry markets the St. Philip’s College brand experience. Her active participation includes service as a college Student Engagement Grant recipient giving back and leading in an era when the college has achieved record enrollment, record graduation rates and the Governor’s Award for Performance Excellence.

Stanberry leads during this era as president of the college's Spirit and Pride Crew team that operates programs leading to increased school pride, student engagement, and participation in school activities that include sporting events.

As commissioner for the college's Student Government Association, Stanberry represents the voices of a college record 13,000-plus enrolled students. The association leadership team and its membership works toward increasing student engagement, improving the student experience and resolving student concerns.

BAE-B-SAFE is a pregnancy prevention awareness project of Healthy Futures of Texas, funded by the Federal Youth Services Bureau for community college students. As a student advocate for the project at St. Philip’s College, Stanberry provides education around the college's version of this project. She fosters a culture of training and awareness amongst students. Stanberry participated as a researcher in the college's nationally-noted Jessica's Project program to address health concerns that benefit the most vulnerable in the nation’s seventh largest city. 

Traditionally, two St. Philip’s College students are recipients of the monthly scholarship each award year, explained Dr. Angela McPherson Williams, the college's director of student success.
