NLC Student, Gema Lozoya, Recognized as District Wide AlamoPROMISE STUDENT OF THE MONTH

January 26, 2022

Northeast Lakeview College congratulates Gema Elizondo Lozoya for being recognized as the January 2022 District-wide AlamoPROMISE Student of the Month.  She was recognized and received her award at the January 25 Board of Trustees Meeting.

Ms. Lozoya began her high school career at Judson High School but then transitioned to Roosevelt as a sophomore, from where she then graduated.  She is currently a student at Northeast Lakeview College in the Public Service AlamoINSTITUTE.  She plans to graduate from NLC with her associate of arts in teaching and then transfer to the University of Texas at San Antonio to complete her teaching degree.  Her ultimate goal is to enter the teaching profession where she hopes to impact the futures of others as her teachers have impacted her.

Gema says she chose to attend Northeast Lakeview College because it is close to home, she wanted smaller classes and a connection with her teachers. She is very grateful for the AlamoPROMISE program because it allowed her to continue with her studies. Her nominator says that Gema is a first-generation college student who was unable to afford college.  She approaches any challenge with determination, including her schoolwork.  She is a great student and a hard worker.

Gema currently has a 3.41 GPA.

As a first-generation college student, the AlamoPROMISE program gave me the opportunity to continue my education,” says Gema. “Thank you to the Alamo Colleges for developing this program and to the NLC faculty and staff for your continued support.”

About the AlamoPROMISE Student of the Month

The program was established to highlight and recognize distinguished students in the AlamoPROMISE program across the Alamo Colleges District.  Students are nominated by their college faculty and staff and meet eligibility requirements, including being in good standing with the College and having a minimum of a 3.0 GPA. A student is selected each month from one of the Alamo Colleges and recognized at the Board of Trustees meeting.  AlamoPROMISE, is the Alamo Colleges District’s program, in partnership with local government, local ISD’s and community organizations, that covers the cost of last-dollar tuition and fees at one of the colleges within the Alamo Colleges District for San Antonio and Bexar County students who plan to earn an associate degree, certification, courses for transfer or workforce training. Currently, there are 47 Bexar County high schools eligible for the AlamoPROMISE program.
