NLC CIMA Research Students Participate in ERN Conference

February 24, 2020

Northeast Lakeview College (NLC) students in the Ciencia, Ingeniería, y Matemáticas Aliados (CIMA) project participated in the Emerging Researchers National (ERN) Conference in Washington, DC. Two NLC students won travel awards and two students, Tristen Rios and Litzy Zelaya were selected to present posters. Former NLC student, Alexandria Stewart, won the travel award to participate in a four-person panel of past conference attendees.  Alexandria was the only student selected to be a part of the panel and they spoke in front of an audience of over 1,300 students and faculty.  She explained how the research opportunity at NLC has changed her life and was a great inspiration to other students.  Only a few community colleges students were select to present so it was a huge honor to have our students represent our school.

CIMA is comprised of five of the Alamo Colleges with the mission to significantly increase the number of underrepresented minority students who attain bachelor’s degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). In an effort to achieve this mission, the CIMA-LSAMP program is active throughout the five colleges, providing students with opportunities such as peer mentorship, faculty mentorship, tutoring, and undergraduate research.
